Double Reflection began with a journey to Israel in the fall of 2006.  A group of 40 people, many return visitors, devoted an intensive week to furthering their understanding of a complex and changing society living on passionately held land.  Long before the Crusades peoples of the Western faiths viewed this land, and Jerusalem in particular as something not quite of the rest of Earth, perhaps a midway point to eternity.  The hills of Jerusalem reflected in its particular golden light still have the power to make grown men cry without a word being said.

Those hills, that space and the people who live there are the first order of reflection.  The two of us tried to capture our perceptions of that essence with our chosen medium, the camera for Harvey Schipper and the palette for Pat Leary.  It then occurred to us that there was a second order of reflection, that between the two of us as artists of the same moments.  We surveyed many images, and selected twelve from which we could draw a thought or detail which could complete the Double Reflection, between artist space and time, and between photographer and painter.
